The Hunger That Consumes

Desire promises that the next object, person or achievement will finally fill the empty place. Hunger grows with every taste until a person dares to stop before the glass and turn inward. What was sought most relentlessly may have been waiting there all along.

Desire can set life in motion but here it becomes a hunger without a bottom. Everything glowing behind the glass appears to be the missing piece of the self. Once obtained, the shine fades and attention reaches for another dose of achievement, admiration, excitement or love. The Hunger That Consumes does not condemn wanting or the pleasure of beautiful things. It examines the moment when they are given a task they cannot perform and expected to certify a person's wholeness. No praise or relationship can soothe the place the narrator refuses to see. The decisive turn comes through stopping. For the first time he does not run toward another light and remains before the inner emptiness long enough to recognize himself within it. Hunger loses its spell not because the world has stopped being beautiful but because it no longer has to prove the owner's worth. The way forward moves from compulsive acquisition toward a return to the source. Saying I have enough is not the abandonment of dreams. It means dreams no longer have to rescue identity and can become free creation rather than a shining chain.
